Interview
Question: What do you bring to the floor that helps your team succeed?
Answer: “I bring a lot of energy, hustle, and offensive rebounding to the floor. I’m a team player and create for my teammates. Playing together is important, and I can help by doing the little things.”
Question: Who’s the toughest player you’ve played against in high school and on the circuit?
Answer: “On the circuit, Babatunde Oladotun. We played him last year at Peach Jam. He didn’t have a great first half, but played really well in the second half and hit a game winner against us. In high school, Jack Kohnen. He’s my teammate on Team Herro, but we played them (Slinger) twice a year in the high school season, once at home, and then the other at Concordia University. He’s a really good player and I like playing with him too. I played well in the first game, and he played well in the second game at Concordia.”
*Babatunde Oladotun is the #1 ranked player in the class of 2027
Question: Being a top nationally ranked player, how do you handle pressure in big games or high-profile matchups?
Answer: “There’s always a little pressure for some games, but you just have to go out there and play your best every single game. Do what you can do and control what you can control. I need to get to my spots and do the little things, whether it’s scoring or drawing defenders and creating an opening for another teammate.”
Question: What is the most underrated part of your game, and what is a weakness?
Answer: “My passing is underrated. Some people tell me they think it’s the best part of my game. It’s an underrated skill I have. One weakness I think would be my ball handling. I’m working on it in the gym every day. Training to get better every day, but my ball handling needs to get better the most.”
Question: What’s your role like on Team Herro, and how does that compare to your role at Freedom High School?
Answer: “On Team Herro, we have a lot of good players, so I just kind of have to find my role. That can be getting rebounds, scoring easy buckets, or setting screens, but it’s mainly a bunch of smaller things. At Freedom, we have some good players too, but we don’t have the top five players in the state on one team. We have good players, though. My role changes a bit to being on ball more. I still do the little things like set screens and grab rebounds, but I have the ball in my hands more and am a leader on the court.”
Question: Can you walk us through a typical day in the life offseason style?
Answer: “Now, since we are still in school, I usually go to school and then lift weights after. After weights, I’ll either shoot around right after or come back at night. Once the school year is over, I’m going to the gym at 5:15 am, working out, lifting, and just being in the gym every day. I’ll go again at night too and put up shots. I’ll work on a lot of three-point shots, but all around too. Some mid-range, but mainly three-point shots.”
Question: Who do you model your game after, or what players do you look up to?
Answer: “My trainer used to say I’m like Carmelo Anthony. I was talking to my coach, and we couldn’t find a player comp I play like, so I’ve been watching more Carmelo. Being from Wisconsin, I also like watching Giannis and the Bucks.”
Question: “How do you bounce back after a poor performance?
Answer: “Mentality is a big thing, especially at Freedom. We had a guy come in once or twice a week and talk to us about team chemistry and mentality. He taught us how to flush it away after a bad performance, focus on the next play or the next game. I just try to follow what he says, so one bad game doesn’t turn into another. Just have to worry about the next game.”
Question: What’s something about your game or work ethic that coaches might not see on the stat sheet?
Answer: “I’m a hustler. I’m sprinting for rebounds and down the floor on the fast break. I get a lot of hockey assists and just make the extra pass for someone else. I think it’s a really underrated part of my game. I think hockey assists should be tracked.”
Question: What’s your game day routine like?
Answer: “During high school season, I’ll have a smoothie before morning shoot around. After school, my Mom usually drops off a sub from Jersey Mike’s or Subway, and we watch the JV team. I’ll listen to Drake songs or any rap before the game. Trying to lock in. Towards the end of the season, I started to do a lot of visualization, which helped me in the playoffs. During AAU season, it’s a lot different. We just get ready for the game, listen to music in the van, and stretch pregame.”
Question: How do you unwind when you’re not playing basketball?
Answer: “I like to hang out with my friends and family. I’m blessed with good friends and family who support me and my dream. I like hanging out with people who know me, even if it consists of just going to someone’s house, to the mall, or swimming. Most of my friends are teammates or old teammates, which is good for team chemistry. It helps us in games, and I like that aspect a lot. I love it.”
Question: What’s a hidden talent or something people would be surprised to learn about you?
Answer: “I’m not that bad of a cook. It’s not really a hidden talent, but I like to bake desserts, cookies, brownies, and cakes. Usually, if someone needs help baking, I’ll help because it’s fun and you can eat a very good treat when it’s done.”
